Horse ride helps drive child care

You don’t have to be a cowboy to saddle up for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The fundraising event is set for 10 a.m. Sept. 24 at the Paddle Creek Horse Camp in the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area.

Events like this, sponsored by the Lawrence County Chapter of Ohio Horseman’s Council, raises money for the children’s hospital that truly puts care over coverage. The horseman’s group has been sponsoring events like this in Lawrence County for many years, all of which are a tremendous benefit to the hospital that mostly pays for its operations with fundraisers and public donations. Horse-riding enthusiasts will seek sponsors to donate on their behalf for the 10-mile trail ride. The event will conclude with an auction and a dinner that even those who didn’t saddle up can participate in.

St. Jude relies on this type of funding. Children are treated at the hospital regardless of health insurance coverage or economic status. Nothing gets in the way of the primary goal of healing. With a daily operating cost of approximately $1.7 million, St. Jude cannot do all it does to save lives without community support. We applaud the horseman’s group for its effort to host this event and hope the community supports it.

For their effort, we recognize them with this week’s “Good News, Good Neighbor” spotlight. Fighting diseases like cancer in our children is as important as anything we can ever do in this world. St. Jude does its part. The Lawrence County Horseman’s Council does what it can. The rest is up to each of us.
