Keep your New Years resolution with help from the family dog

(added few years ago!)

So, you failed the annual pinch test and plan to make the traditional New Year’s resolution yet again to lose those extra pounds. Misery loves company, so how about recruiting your dog as a work-out partner this year? The two of you can get into shape for spring and have fun bonding.

Partnered exercise can be as simple as walking, hiking or jogging together.Get out in the back yard and throw a ball for your retriever to retrieve, making a game of it so you both get moving.

Beyond the usual, though, isn’t the New Year a perfect time to try new things? Dancing Dancing with your dog is not peculiar by today’s standards; actually, it has become a competitive sport. This unique obedience performance is choreographed to music.

Boogying with Bowser only requires that your dog understand basic “Heel,” “Sit” and “Down” commands. So, if you like to tango, square dance or tap happily, this is the activity for you.
Bike-riding.

Perhaps you prefer bike-riding to disco dancing, but hate traveling alone. With a little training, your canine buddy can accompany you. Start with no more than a quarter-mile jaunt, and don’t let your dog run faster than a trot. Teach the commands, “Whoa,” “Right” and “Left” to signal what action the bicycle will take. Choose your route carefully so your pet is not in harm’s way; a bike path can be ideal.
Swimming.

Swimming together is a possibility, if you spend time at warm weather locations. It is important, though, that you don’t force your dog into the water. Encouraging your dog with a toy or treat will help form good associations rather than fearful ones. Keep in mind, French Bulldogs aren’t Labradors; some breeds are not as capable in the water.

Life jackets may be helpful here. A long line is a good idea until dogs have learned not to go out too far. Rinse off dogs that have been swimming in salt water, as it can dry out the skin and coat, just as it can our skin and hair.

Rollerblading-Another sport that can work as a team effort is rollerblading. The well-know dog trainer, Cesar Milan, has popularized this as a bonding exercise. He suggests the activity to reinforce leadership and explains that it keeps dogs mentally and physically fit, while deterring or helping alter behavior problems. Invest in a pair of rollerblades.

As well as in spending the time needed to teach your dog to stay by your side and stop when asked. Choose non-restrictive harnesses for your pet. Do not attempt rollerblading with dogs that don’t obey or that want to chase things. Again, choose places to rollerblade, such as bike paths, that won’t put you and your pet in traffic.Snow sports.

Finally, for those who love snow, skijoring is a great way to tone-up and have fun. This is a combination of cross country skiing and dog-mushing (like sledding dogs).  Some equipment is necessary: a specialized skijoring belt, a dog harness and tow line. Again, basic training is essential. A dog should at least know the commands “Left/Right,” “Stop” and “Go.”

More than one dog can work as a skijoring team.Don’t forget, before embarking on any exercise regimen, it is essential that you get the green light from your doctor and your dog’s veterinarian. Tell the vet what you’ve got planned to make sure the activity accords with your pet’s abilities and ask for tips on how to do it safely.

It is important to consider your pet’s age, condition and size, and not to push beyond the limits of what is healthy. Build slowly toward reasonable goals. Keep in mind breed characteristics; for instance, short-legged/long-backed breeds and short-faced breeds with pinched nostrils will not have the same capabilities as other dogs. Smooth-coated dogs may need to wear warm gear during cold conditions, and depending upon the activity, some may require paw protection.

Make sure dogs’ nails are trimmed properly. Keep an eye on paw condition. Don’t use choke, prong collars or head halters. Use leather or cotton leashes, as they are gentler on hands. Don’t work your dog right after it has eaten — especially large dogs. Fresh water should always be available. All of these sports, except freestyle dancing and swimming, are too intense for puppies. Wishing you and your dog health and happiness for your New Year.
